Piermont is one of Rockland County’s most distinctive Hudson River villages, blending history, waterfront scenery, arts, dining, recreation, and a strong sense of local identity. The village sits where Sparkill Creek meets the Hudson River, at a natural break in the Palisades, giving Piermont a setting that has shaped its history for centuries.
Today, Piermont attracts residents and visitors for its walkable downtown, galleries, boutiques, restaurants, river views, community events, and outdoor recreation. The village’s official visitor guide highlights Main Street shopping, galleries, dining, the pier, the marsh, and nearby parks as central parts of the Piermont experience.
The Piermont Pier is one of the village’s defining landmarks. Extending nearly a mile into the Hudson River, it offers expansive views, fishing, walking, jogging, and birdwatching. Just beside it, the Piermont Marsh forms part of the Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve and stretches along the shoreline south of the pier.
The riverfront is central to Piermont’s identity. Residents and visitors come for the changing light on the Hudson, views toward Westchester, and easy access to walking and cycling routes along the water.
Piermont has a strong creative and cultural identity. Main Street is lined with restaurants, independent shops, galleries, and small businesses, giving the village a lively but intimate feel. The village regularly hosts art shows, concerts, festivals, and seasonal events, including Art in the Park, Bastille Day, the American Roots Outdoor Music Festival, the Gift of Art Show and Sale, and Piermont’s Apple Festival.
The result is a community that feels different from a typical suburban market. Piermont has a more artistic, walkable, destination-oriented atmosphere, especially on weekends when visitors come for food, art, the waterfront, and village events.
Piermont’s history reaches back to the earliest settlement along Sparkill Creek. During the Revolutionary era, the Onderdonk House was associated with declared patriots, and in 1783 George Washington met with British Commander-in-Chief Sir Guy Carleton aboard a ship anchored offshore.
The village later became a major railroad center. In the 1830s, the Erie Railroad developed the pier as part of its eastern terminus, and the name “Piermont” was created from the pier and the mountain above.
During World War II, Piermont became known as “Last Stop USA.” The pier was used as a major embarkation point for troops heading to Europe, and nearly 1.3 million soldiers passed through Piermont on their way overseas.
Piermont’s local history is still visible throughout the village.
The Piermont Railroad Station on Ash Street dates to the 19th century and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Piermont drawbridge, built in 1880, remains a rare hand-operated bridge and today provides pedestrian access toward Tallman Mountain State Park.
Flywheel Park also preserves part of Piermont’s industrial past, including a massive flywheel left behind from the former paper mill complex.
Piermont offers unusually strong access to nature for such a compact village.
Tallman Mountain State Park is directly accessible near the village and offers hiking, walking, cross-country skiing, tennis, picnic areas, fields, and scenic views.
The Piermont Pier, Piermont Marsh, Sparkill Creek, local parks, and nearby trails make the village particularly attractive to cyclists, walkers, runners, kayakers, birdwatchers, and people who simply want to spend time along the Hudson.
Piermont real estate is as distinctive as the village itself.
